Position Number: F8650z

Web Announcement:

Associate/Full Professor in Media Production/Director Film and Video Studies (F8650z)

The George Mason University, Department of Communication in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), and the Film and Video Studies (FAVS) program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) seek an experienced scholar/practitioner in the area of film, video, and related new media with administrative experience to teach in the Communication Department and direct the FAVS program. The position is a tenured appointment in CHSS. Directorship of the FAVS program is independent of tenure and is determined by CVPA.

In recognition of the growing importance of film studies and production in both the field of communication and in the arts and entertainment, Mason's FAVS program was created as a joint project between the two colleges, CHSS and CVPA. While the program is housed in CVPA, its leadership has been a tenured faculty member within the Department of Communication. The ideal candidate will be someone who can successfully bridge communication scholarship and film/video creation and production.

Film and Video Studies (FAVS) is a growing, multidisciplinary B.A. program, with over 180 majors drawing on courses from several departments (currently including Art and Visual Technology, Communication, English, History and Art History, Modern and Classical Languages, New Century College, and Theater). Students study film theory, criticism, ethics, video production, screenwriting, and the business of film and video with concentrations in production, screenwriting and business. See: http://favs.gmu.edu/.

Teaching responsibilities will include courses in techniques and aesthetics of media production, theories and/or history of film or electronic/digital media, and visual communication in the Communication Department; as well as overseeing internships and teaching FAVS 100 in the FAVS program. The successful candidate should have some university administrative and fundraising experience; as well as an active level of scholarship and/or creative activity in an area of expertise related to film, video, and related new media. Qualifications: terminal degree as well as professional experience as a filmmaker, producer, or scriptwriter; and teaching experience at the college-level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position begins August 2013.

The Communication Department offers a broad undergraduate program with 1,000 undergraduate majors and 100 M.A. and Ph.D. students focused on health and/or strategic communication. The department serves general education requirements, houses cocurricular activities (e.g., debate, forensics, student newspaper, video yearbook, campus radio station, etc.), and supports various research centers. See: http://communication.gmu.edu/.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts serves more than 1,300 majors in seven academic units: Arts Management, Art and Visual Technology, Computer Game Design, Dance, FAVS, Music and Theater; and offers the B.A., BFA, B.Mus., M.A., MFA, DMA, and Ph.D. degrees. In addition, CVPA manages two regional performing arts centers, the Center for the Arts in Fairfax and the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. See: http://cvpa.gmu.edu/.

George Mason University prides itself on the diversity of its student body as expressed in age, cultural background, and work experience.
