Tax exemption legislation introduced in Florida

Janice Wood | News | 4 hours ago

Florida State Senator Michael Bennett (R-61) has introduced SB 1384, which would provide a tax exemption on labor and parts for maintenance on aircraft weighing 2,000 pounds or more. The current statute provides the exemption for aircraft weighing 15,000 pounds or more.

This is seen as a boost to maintenance and repair businesses in Florida so they can compete on a more level playing field with other states with similar exemptions, officials with the Florida Aviation Trades Association said, noting Representative Steve Crisafulli (R-32) has filed a companion bill in the House, HB 1213.

The Obama administration is rewriting its defense strategy to absorb hundreds of billions of dollars in the U.S. defense budget cuts while scaling back the longstanding Pentagon goal of being ready to fight two wars simultaneously. The strategy, to be outlined at a news conference also attended by Panetta and Dempsey, is not expected to mark a big change in defense priorities. It may set the stage, however, for expected cutbacks in Europe and big weapons programs. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

(AP) ? Looking beyond the wars he inherited, President Barack Obama on Thursday launched a reshaping and shrinking of the military. He vowed to preserve U.S. pre-eminence even as the Army and Marine Corps shed troops and the administration considers reducing its arsenal of nuclear weapons.

The changes won't come without risk, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. But he called it acceptable and, because of budget restraints, inevitable.

In a presentation at the Pentagon, Obama said the U.S. is "turning a page" after having killed Osama bin Laden, withdrawn troops from Iraq and begun to wind down the war in Afghanistan. He outlined a vision for the future that some Republican lawmakers quickly dubbed wrong-headed.

"Our military will be leaner, but the world must know the United States is going to maintain our military superiority," Obama said with Panetta and the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, Gen. Martin Dempsey, at his side.

In a presidential election year the strategy gives Obama a rhetorical tool to defend his Pentagon budget-cutting choices. Republican contenders for the White House already have attacked him on national security issues including missile defense, Iran and planned reductions in ground forces.

Obama unveiled the results of an eight-month defense strategy review that is intended to guide decisions on cutting hundreds of billions from planned Pentagon spending over the coming decade. The eight-page document contained no details about how broad concepts for reshaping the military ? such as focusing more on Asia and less on Europe ? will translate into troop or weapons cuts.

Those details will be included in the 2013 defense budget to be submitted to Congress next month.

In about every major war or defense speech Obama hits themes intended to resonate with American voters ? mainly, that the United States is turning a page from two wars, and that any nation-building will focus on improving the United States, not strategic allies abroad.

The economy is more likely to determine Obama's re-election fate than national security. To keep his promises to shrink the deficit and to prove he is serious about fiscal management to voters wary of enormous government spending, Obama must show the oft-protected Pentagon is not exempt.

The political danger, though, is that his opponents will use any slashing of spending to paint the president as weak on security.

Both Panetta and Dempsey said they anticipate heavy criticism of their new strategy, which was begun last spring by then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates after Obama called for defense spending cuts. The Pentagon now faces at least $487 billion in cuts in planned defense spending over 10 years.

The criticism from Republicans came quickly.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, issued a statement saying, "This is a lead-from-behind strategy for a left-behind America." He called it a "retreat from the world in the guise of a new strategy."

Panetta said that smaller military budgets will mean some trade-offs and that the U.S. will take on "some level of additional but acceptable risk." But in a changing world the Pentagon would have been forced to make a strategy shift anyway, he said. The money crisis merely forced the government's hand.

Obama wants the new strategy to represent a pivotal point in his stewardship of defense policy, which has been burdened by two expensive wars begun under President George W. Bush. The drag those conflicts placed on military resources has deferred other priorities.

Obama said his administration would not repeat the mistakes made after World War II and Vietnam when defense reductions left the military ill-prepared.

"As commander in chief, I will not let that happen again," he said. "Not on my watch."

Obama's involvement in the defense review and his decision to personally announce it at the Pentagon underscore that he is not just a commander in chief coping with a slimmer military in debt-ridden times. He is also an incumbent president seeking a second term and wanting to show who's in charge.

Dempsey praised the military strategy and the work of crafting it, calling it inclusive and comprehensive.

"It's not perfect," the general said. "There will be people who think it goes too far. Others will say it doesn't go nearly far enough. That probably makes it about right. It gives us what we need."

Obama said the military will be reshaped between now and 2020 with an emphasis on countering terrorism, maintaining a nuclear deterrent, protecting the U.S. homeland and "deterring and defeating aggression by any potential adversary."

Those are not new military missions, and Obama announced no new capabilities or defense initiatives. He described a U.S. force that will retain much of its recent focus, with the exception of fighting a large-scale, prolonged conflict like the recently ended Iraq mission or the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

"U.S. forces will no longer be sized to conduct large-scale, prolonged stability operations," the strategy document said, referring to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Left unsaid: The military was not sized for those unexpectedly long wars when they began. The Army had to be expanded by tens of thousands of soldiers and the Marine Corps also grew. The military at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was being shaped in somewhat the same form as Obama's vision for 2020: agile, flexible, reliant on high-tech weaponry and dependent on allies.

The new strategy moves the U.S. further from its longstanding goal of being able to successfully fight two major regional wars at the same time.

It said the U.S. will maintain a robust nuclear arsenal but hinted at reductions.

"It is possible that our deterrence goals can be achieved with a smaller nuclear force, which would reduce the number of nuclear weapons in our inventory as well as their role in U.S. national security strategy," the strategy said.

The new strategy strongly suggests a reduced U.S. military presence in Europe, notwithstanding a continuing close relationship with NATO, and says Asia will be a bigger priority. It also emphasizes improving U.S. capabilities in the areas of cyberwarfare, missile defense, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen praised the U.S. strategy, calling it consistent with the alliance's vision for collective defense.

Exclusive: EU agrees to embargo on Iranian crude (Reuters)

BRUSSELS/TEHRAN (Reuters) ? European governments have agreed in principle to ban imports of Iranian oil, EU diplomats said on Wednesday, dealing a blow to Tehran that crowns new Western sanctions months before an Iranian election.

The prospective embargo by the European Union, along with tough U.S. financial measures signed into law by President Barack Obama on New Year's Eve, form a concerted Western campaign to hold back Iran's nuclear program.

Iran says the program is strictly non-military, but Western countries say a November U.N. report shows it has sought to build an atomic bomb. Talks between Tehran and major powers broke down a year ago.

Diplomats said EU envoys held talks on Iran in the last days of December, and that any objections to an oil embargo had been dropped - notably from crisis-hit Greece which gets a third of its oil from Iran, relying on Tehran's lenient financing. Spain and Italy are also big buyers.

"A lot of progress has been made," one EU diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The principle of an oil embargo is agreed. It is not being debated any more."

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland called the EU moves "the kinds of steps that we would like to see not just from our close allies and partners in places like Europe but from countries around the world."

"We do believe that this is consistent with tightening the noose on Iran economically," she said.

A U.S. Treasury official said Tehran's oil revenues could be choked off without disrupting global oil markets.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will travel to China and Japan next week to discuss U.S. sanctions on Iran and the state of the global economy.

The embargo will force Tehran to find other buyers for oil. EU countries buy about 450,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Iran's 2.6 million bpd in exports, making the bloc collectively the second largest market for Iranian crude after China.

Prime Minister Mario Monti said Italy was ready to back an oil embargo as long as it was imposed gradually and deliveries to repay Tehran's debts to Italian energy firm ENI were exempted.

The news caused a spike rise in oil prices, with Brent crude peaking at nearly $114 a barrel in intraday trading, up nearly $2 from Tuesday's close.

Tehran insisted it would have no trouble: "We could very easily replace these customers," said S. M. Qamsari, International Director of the National Iranian Oil Co.

But the new U.S. sanctions have already made it difficult for Iran to keep its customers, and could force it to offer steep discounts to countries willing to risk doing business with it, hurting its revenues.

Biggest trading partner China, driving a hard bargain, has cut its orders of Iranian oil by more than half this month.

REAL IMPACT

Western countries have imposed various sanctions on Iran for years with little impact. But the latest measures are qualitatively different, directly targeting Iran's oil industry, which forms 60 percent of its economy.

Most traders expect Iran will still find buyers for its crude, mostly in Asia, but it is going to have to offer substantial discounts, cutting back the revenue that the state relies on to subsidize basic goods for its citizens.

Tougher sanctions appear to be having an impact already on Iran's streets, where prices for foodstuffs are soaring. The rial currency has lost 40 percent of its value against the dollar over the past month.

Currency exchanges have shut in Tehran and Iranians have queued to withdraw their savings from banks and buy dollars.

That economic hardship is being felt by the public two months before a parliamentary election, Iran's first since a disputed 2009 presidential vote that led to massive street demonstrations, put down violently by Iran's rulers.

Iran's leaders are anxious to prevent any popular unrest, especially after the Arab Spring revolts last year showed the vulnerability of Middle Eastern governments to street protest.

Iran has warned that any steps to cut its oil exports could cause havoc in international oil markets at a time of global economic pain. In recent weeks it has also resorted to increasingly aggressive military saber-rattling.

Tehran threatened last month to shut the Strait of Hormuz - outlet to the Gulf through which 40 percent of traded oil flows - and on Tuesday threatened to take unspecified action if a U.S. aircraft carrier sails through the strait.

Washington, which has a carrier strike group led by the USS John C Stennis in the Arabian Sea, brushed off that threat and said its navy would continue to sail the strait.

Most analysts dismiss the saber-rattling as a bluff and say they do not expect war.

"There's an anticipation that it might lead to an escalation of military activity in the region, but we think this is overplayed," said Gareth Lewis-Davies, energy strategist at BNP Paribas in London.

The EU diplomats said member countries had not yet agreed on how soon the embargo should take effect and were still debating other possible sanctions.

France has said it wants the EU embargo and other sanctions agreed at a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers at the end of this month. Paris also seeks a ban on transactions with the Iranian central bank, similar to what Washington has imposed.

The new U.S. financial sanctions, if imposed fully, would make it all but impossible for many refineries to pay for Iranian crude. The law grants Obama the power to issue temporary waivers to prevent shocks in energy markets.

A Turkish energy official said Ankara, which buys about 30 percent of its oil from Iran, was seeking a waiver from Washington for its biggest refiner, Tupras.

Washington says it is discussing with its allies how to implement the measures without causing an oil supply shock.

Rick Santorum Iowa Caucus Performance Bolstered By Tea Party, Religious Voters

WASHINGTON ? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was winning strong support from Republicans seeking a candidate who can topple President Barack Obama in November's elections, according to an entrance poll of GOP voters attending Iowa's presidential caucuses on Tuesday.

Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, was countering with solid backing from tea party supporters, religious voters and other conservatives. And Texas Rep. Ron Paul was scoring highly with young voters, independents and people concerned about huge federal budget deficits.

The divisions helped explain a night in which Romney, Santorum and Paul were running neck and neck ? and ahead of their three other competitors ? in the year's first votes to be cast as Republicans start selecting their presidential nominee.

Given a choice of four qualities they were seeking in their party's nominee, about 3 in 10 said they wanted someone who could defeat Obama this fall. About half of that group said they were backing Romney, more than twice as many as cited any other candidate.

Santorum was leading among those seeking a candidate with strong moral character, with about 4 in 10 picking him. Santorum and Paul were running about even among those who said they wanted a true conservative as their standard bearer.

Nearly 3 in 10 supporters of the conservative tea party movement were supporting Santorum, and about the same proportion of born-again or evangelical voters were also backing him. That gave Santorum a clear lead among both groups, which are important because each account for about 6 in 10 Iowa GOP caucus goers.

Paul had the backing of about half of voters under age 30 and more than 4 in 10 independents, giving him large leads in both categories. That could be good news for Paul in New Hampshire, where independents represented almost 4 in 10 voters in that state's 2008 GOP presidential primary.

Asked the campaign's top issue, about 4 in 10 named the economy. Romney led among that group with support from about a third of them, underscoring the appeal of his background running an investment company before entering politics and his emphasis during the campaign on his business experience.

About a third of GOP caucus goers said they were most concerned about budget deficits, and 3 in 10 of them picked Paul, more than any of his rivals.

The survey was conducted for AP and the television networks by Edison Research as voters arrived at 40 randomly selected caucus sites in Iowa. The survey involved interviews with 1,737 caucus-goers and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points

Capital Bikeshare Moves Forward Toward Corporate Sponsorship

WASHINGTON -- Capital Bikeshare is now moving forward with making the corporate sponsorship plan that was being considered in the fall a reality.

The Huffington Post caught up with two of the program's District Department of Transportation project managers, Chris Holben and Josh Moskowitz, who said that Capital Bikeshare has begun to map out who will advertise and how after receiving approval in May from the D.C. Council during city budget discussions.

Moskowitz explained that the program is in the process of writing what will likely be an Invitation for Bid, which will solicit prospective partners to submit proposals for potential advertising plans. Although details regarding the nature of the IFB are still being sketched out, Moskowitz said that it will likely be broken up into several components, including sign advertising and title sponsorship.

Where would the advertisements go? One plan is to change the two-sided map panels currently on display at each station, which feature a local map of nearby stations on one side and a larger regional map of the entire Capital Bikeshare network on the other. Moskowitz said that the regional maps would likely be nixed in favor of an advertising component.

As HuffPost reported in September, title sponsorship -- the naming rights to the program and visual branding -- are now being considered as major components.

"We envision being able to place your logo on the bike itself," Moskowitz said. "And then naming rights may also be something that we'll look at as well, depending on the offers. ... Price will be a significant metric that we look at in evaluating our proposals."

Moskowitz said the bikeshare system is open to any number of advertising schemes, which could include a plan to integrate promotions with the partner company into the program's daily operations.

There isn't a definitive timeline for when this will all happen, but advertising solicitation will likely be put out before any such thing for title sponsorship, and Moskowitz and his team are hoping to get things moving "as soon as possible." When finalized, advertising measures will only apply to bikes and stations in the District of Columbia because, Moskowitz said, "Arlington right now doesn't have the ability to do that legally," noting restrictions on bikeshare funding in the Virginia county, which is also part of the system.

The push for advertisers comes as Capital Bikeshare continues attempts to become financially sustainable.

Last winter, the program reduced the number of bikes available city-wide. "When we first started out the system last fall, it was two-thirds full of bikes," said Holben. "We realized for operational reasons that was too much." It lowered the dock-to-bike ratio from 66 percent to 50 percent, leaving the total number of bikes in the system at 1,144.

In November of last year, the program took a step further by upping up the price of a pass from $5 to $7.

Despite these measures, ridership has declined in recent months. Washington City Paper's Lydia DePillis recently took note:

I've got to say, it's not the weather. We've had an uncommonly mild fall and winter, with only a few unbikeably frigid days--on balance, no worse than the heat of the summer. ... It's true that tourism in D.C. is a highly seasonal business, and it looks like visitors might be a bigger part of the Bikeshare constituency than I, at least, had expected.

Holben downplayed the suggestion that enthusiasm for the program, which launched in September 2010, is beginning to taper off. "We're just starting our second year of service, so it's still pretty new of what is standard and what is the first year," he said. "We knew that usage would drop as the weather got colder and as the number of tourists in town decreases, which happens in fall and winter. This happened last year, too."

Unlike other cities with bikeshare programs -- including Boston, Minneapolis, Denver and Montreal -- D.C.'s remains open in winter, a decision influenced partly by the city's milder weather and its effective methods of snow removal. Although closing the program in colder months might save money, it was never something DDOT considered. "Usually, people are clamoring for the system to be open," Holben said.

Moskowitz is assured that ridership numbers will bounce back to what they were pre-chill.

"Certainly, I think as we approach the spring and summer months ... we're going to be able to meet and exceed the ridership numbers that we've seen." The financial bump from advertisers, he said, will help the program continue to thrive. "It will also give us the resources to continue to expand."

Last month, Montgomery County officials applied for a $1 million grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation that would bring 29 stations and 204 bikes to areas between the Capital Beltway and the Maryland-D.C. border, with stations in Bethesda, Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase, the Medical Center area, Silver Spring and Takoma Park.

In June, the county received a $1.3 million grant for stations outside the Beltway, in places like Rockville and the Shady Grove Metrorail station.

In September, Capital Bikeshare announced plans to install 32 additional docking stations in the District and another 30 in Arlington County, and a month later, it announced the system would expand to Alexandria.

Roku expands beyond Internet video-streaming boxes

(AP) ? Roku is thinking outside its set-top box in an attempt to bring more Internet video to flat-panel televisions.

The new approach will rely on a finger-sized device that won't require extra cords or separate remote controls to stream video over high-speed Internet connections. The product, called the Roku Streaming Stick, will plug directly into a high-definition port available on a growing number of new-breed TVs, just as a flash drive fits into a computer's USB outlet.

The streaming stick won't be available until the second half of this year, but Roku announced it Wednesday to get a jump on the onslaught of consumer gadgets that will be unveiled next week at an annual electronics show in Las Vegas.

Roku's streaming stick will only work on televisions that have mobile high-definition links. The technology, known as MHL, is being backed by a group that includes Samsung Electronics Co., Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp.

Although it's still a small company, Roku Inc. has emerged as a significant player in the steadily growing market for Internet video since it introduced its first set-top box nearly four years ago. Originally designed to deliver Netflix's Internet streaming service to big-screen TVs, Roku's boxes now include more than 400 different online entertainment options.

As Roku added more choices, the prices of its boxes have fallen to as low as $50 ? down from device's original price of $100. The price cuts and expanded programming line-up helped Roku sell about 1.5 million streaming boxes last year, tripling its volume from 2010. The privately held company says it had about $150 million in revenue last year. It won't say whether it's profitable.

The streaming stick is expected to sell for $50 to $100. Electronics retailer Best Buy Co. plans to include the streaming stick in a line of TVs bearing its in-store brand, Insignia.

Roku, which is based in Saratoga, Calif., decided to develop a more condensed version of its set-top box to cater to so-called "smart" TVs. That's become a catchphrase for TVs that can be used to show content from stored on websites and mobile devices in addition to the more conventional fare from cable and satellite carriers.

Unlike smartphones running on software made by Apple Inc., Google Inc. and other technology vendors, smart TVs still remain more of a geeky novelty than a household staple.

Google has tried to widen the acceptance by developing Internet-surfing software for smart TVs, but that effort hasn't made much headway since it launched 15 months ago. Apple is believed to be working on a smart TV that could hit the market this year or next year. .

Wikipedia gets $20M in annual fundraising drive

(AP) ? Wikipedia has raised $20 million in its annual plea for donations to help expand and improve the Internet's leading encyclopedia.

More than 1 million people throughout the world contributed the money during a 46-day fundraising drive, which concluded Sunday. The amount pledged to the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit group that oversees the volunteer-driven Wikipedia, is a third more than the $15 million donated during the previous year's fundraising campaign.

The year-end financial push accounts for most of Wikimedia's revenue. The foundation also gets money from grants and other donations spread throughout the year.

Wikipedia relies on the foundation to provide one of the world's most popular reference tools. Its 10-year-old website has amassed an index of more than 20 million entries in 280 languages on subjects ranging from the history of Howdy Doody to the origins of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. The free articles are compiled and maintained by about 90,000 editors who volunteer to share their research and knowledge. About 474 million people visited Wikipedia in November, according to the most recent data from the research firm comScore Inc.

Even as Wikipedia has become more influential, Wikimedia's management has been fretting over whether the online encyclopedia will be able to afford the technology upgrades it needs to stay relevant. Wikipedia has been investing heavily to make its website more accessible and compelling on mobile devices, which are gradually replacing desktop and laptop computers as the main way people look up information on the Internet.

Attracting and retaining editors has become more difficult, a problem that Wikipedia blames on its reliance on outdated software for editing its entries. The number of editors contributing to Wikipedia has dropped from a peak of 100,000 during the past year or so. Wikipedia believes it can reach 200,000 editors and 50 million articles by pouring more money into software upgrades, hiring more engineers and upgrading its mobile tools

Wikimedia, which is based in San Francisco, is striving for revenue of $29.5 million in its fiscal year ending June 30. That would be a 19 percent increase from revenue of nearly $25 million in the previous year.

Bolstered by the success of its recent fundraising, Wikimedia is confident that it can hit its revenue target for the current fiscal year, foundation spokesman Jay Walsh said Tuesday. He declined to say how much more money Wikimedia needs reach the goal.

Wikimedia expects to spend $28.3 million in the current fiscal year, with nearly half the money going toward employee salaries and other staffing costs. The foundation currently employs about 90 workers.

Canada: Sham sharia finance company loses $2 million in gold ...

Blinded by diversity and the false promise of sharia. via Mystery of the missing $2 million in gold bullion ? thestar.com.

The head of an insolvent mortgage company unloaded $2.2 million in gold and silver from his car at a Rexdale parking lot at night, according to his own testimony, and handed it to a man who has since disappeared.

Court documents also tell of gold bullion and thousands of silver coins being ferried around the city in private cars, with no added security, from downtown banks to outlying business offices.

One participant has returned the silver. Court-appointed receiver Grant Thornton Ltd., in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, is still demanding nearly $2 million in gold bars.

The only person who seems to know where it is ? a Toronto resident from Egypt called Joseph Adam ? left for Egypt two months ago and cannot be found.

?He should come here and tell us (where the gold is),? Mississauga Muslim cleric Yusuf Panchbaya testified in November at the receivership hearings. ?If he doesn?t, then in that case he can let us know even by phone or whatever, so where it is, or if need be, we are even prepared to go to Egypt and look for it.?

?Do you think he took the gold to Egypt?? the examining lawyer asked.

?I don?t think he has taken it with him to Egypt,? the witness replied.

The troubled mortgage company is actually two related firms called UM Financial Inc. and UM Capital Inc., the first of which was founded in 2004 by Brampton resident Omar Kalair as a venture into ?sharia compliant? home mortgages.

Court documents show 172 homeowners were involved with the UM companies when they went into receivership in October, and UM presenting itself as Canada?s leading sharia mortgage firm.

But the case is attracting attention.

For several years, several Canadian banks have experimented in offering sharia-compliant services and in January the University of Toronto is to offer its first course on the subject.

Walid Hejazi, of the university?s Rotman School of Management, has said his three-day course will cater to executives who ?want to get an edge to differentiate themselves.?

Muslim cleric Panchbaya had once been chairman of UM Financial and was now claiming $2.7 million on behalf of himself and four other local clerics. The group said they had given the company free sharia guidance for several years and eventually expected to be paid.

Giving sharia guidance in Canada? Why?

Read the bizarre story to get an idea of how sharia financiers operate?at the expense of infidels.

Kidney Donors Reach Out on Facebook

Facebook is also a place to cry for help, particularly for those who are in need of kidney donors.

Damon Brown from Seattle is only one of fortunate individuals who found a kidney on Facebook. He told his story on a special page he created under the name, "Damon Kidney," AP reports.

Fortunately, Damon's friends and family forwarded his link to everyone they knew - until an acquaintance of his wife responded. ?

The family was surprised over the kind gesture of someone they had known for years, but had not been very close to.

"She said it wasn't really for me. It was for my kids, because they deserve to have a dad around," Brown, 38, told AP.

Damon was on the official transplant list and had started mobile dialysis through Northwest Kidney Centers but as he was seeing his health deteriorate, he and his wife decided it was time to make a public plea for help on Facebook via 'Damon Kidney.'

The page eventually drew over 1400 friends.

Just a few weeks ago, after his transplant was approved and scheduled, Brown posted the good news to his Facebook friends, over 300 of whom responded positively to the good news.

Damon's kidney donor, Jacqueline Ryall, 45,?told AP her mother does not understand why she would give a kidney to someone other than her own brother and sister, and her family is worried about her health going forward.

However, Ryall did her own research and figured it is relatively safe for a woman in good health to donate a kidney.

She said her decision to share a kidney is an act of gratitude for all the good things she has in her life.?

April Paschke, a spokeswoman for the United Network for Organ Sharing, a private non-profit organisation that manages the nation's organ transplant system for the federal government, told AP the agency has been seeing an increase in the number of kidney requests being posted to Facebook and other social media sites.

"It's an extension of the way we communicate. Before we found the internet, people found other ways: through a church bulletin, word of mouth or an advertisement even,'' Ms. Pasche noted.

AP further reports in 2011 alone, a man in Michigan also found a kidney donor through Facebook, and a Florida woman found one through Craigslist, a popular website for posting free advertisements.

An average of 46 kidney transplants take place each day in the United States while another 13 people who have been waiting for a kidney die each day. About 90,000 are on the transplant list right now, AP reports.
