The Go-Anywhere Workspace

The Go-Anywhere Workspace

We tend to look at workspaces as places with desks and decoration. At least, that's what we normally post about. When you need to work, however, a distilled toolset often matters more than the space around you. After all, when you can move you can change that space whenever you like.

Reader Pete Mayhem submitted his workspace, which allows him to go essentially wherever he likes. A Chromebook, smartphone, mobile hotspot, notebook, pens, and a flash drive make up his space in any location. Very little lets you move, get things done, and be where you want to be. So how much does the space actually matter when you have your perfect toolset at your disposal?

For a full breakdown of everything in Pete's mobile workspace, check out his posting on Flickr.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, share them with us by posting it to your personal Kinja blog using the tag featured workspace or adding it to our Lifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Flickr pool. Photos must be at least at least 640x360 and please include information about what you used, how you came up with the design, and any other relevant details. If your awesome workspace catches our eye, you might get featured!

Egypt's minister defends ousting president

CAIRO (AP) ? In his first remarks since Mohammed Morsi's ouster, Egypt's military chief said on Sunday the armed forces acted according to the will of the people because the former Islamist government had stumbled.

Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi made his comments on the eve of another round of mass protests by Morsi's Islamist supporters who have accused the military of staging a coup and demanded the reinstatement of Egypt's first democratically elected president.

Also Sunday, Egypt's chief prosecutor froze the assets of Mohammed Badie, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which Morsi hails, and at least 13 other senior members of the Islamist group. The U.S. State Department's No. 2 diplomat, William Burns, arrived in Cairo on Sunday, the first visit by a high-level American official since Morsi's ouster.

Burns was scheduled to meet with Egypt's interim government officials as well as civil society and business leaders during his two-day visit. The State Department says Burns would underscore in his meetings U.S. support for the Egyptian people and a transition leading to an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government.

The July 3 overthrow of Morsi has come under criticism from many in the international community because of concerns about its effect on Egypt's efforts to become a democracy following the February 2011 toppling of autocrat Hosni Mubarak's regime in a popular uprising.

El-Sissi said the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces respected the June 2012 elections that propelled Morsi to power with a narrow victory and tried to stay out of politics. But he said the military could no longer stand on the sidelines as millions of Egyptians took to the streets to call for the Islamist leader to step down because of allegations he was abusing his power.

El-Sissi said he reached out to Morsi through two envoys, including then Prime Minister Hesham Kandil, on more than one occasion urging him to hold a referendum on whether voters still supported his presidency, but the suggestion was rejected out of hand.

"No one is a guardian of the public, and no one can dictate or force a path or thought that they don't accept,"el-Sissi said in remarks to officers, which were reported by state-run media. "The armed forces sincerely accepted the choice of the people, but then political decision-making began stumbling and the armed forces took the view that any correction or adjustment must come from only one source and that is the legitimacy of the people."

The decision led to mass demonstrations by his supporters and bloody clashes with security forces and rival protesters. Morsi's supporters have been holding a sit-in to demand his reinstatement as well as calling for the ousted president to be released from detention. He has been held by the army in an undisclosed location since his removal from office. The Muslim Brotherhood and allies called for more mass rallies nationwide on Monday,

Meanwhile, the country's interim president swore-in leading reform advocate Mohamed ElBaradei as Egypt's interim vice president Sunday, reinforcing the role of liberals in the new leadership who are strongly opposed to the Brotherhood.

ElBaradei emerged as the top opposition leader in the campaign to oust Morsi. The 71-year-old won a Nobel Peace Prize for his role as the head of the U.N.'s International Atomic energy Agency. He returned home to assume a role in the anti-Mubarak uprising and emerged as one of the most visible leaders in the badly fractured Egyptian liberal and secular opposition to Morsi's government.

ElBaradei headed of the National Salvation Front, a coalition of largely secular groups. Tamarod, the newly founded youth movement that initiated the anti-Morsi protests on June 30 that ultimately led to his ouster, also chose ElBaradei as its representative.

ElBaradei will be tasked with handling Egypt's foreign relations, filling a position that did not exist under Morsi or previous governments. The details of his mandate remain unclear.

After the veteran diplomat was sworn in Sunday, NSF spokesman Khaled Dawoud said ElBaradei no longer heads the NSF coalition.

"He is now a vice president for all Egyptians," Dawoud said.

Some Sanford residents struggle to cope with Zimmerman verdict

SANFORD, Fla. ? Under the hot Florida sun the morning after George Zimmerman was found not guilty, Kathy McGill stood next to a brick monument adorned with the names of 10 local young people who had been shot or stabbed to death. The name at the top of the monument, located in the center of Sanford?s historic black neighborhood of Goldsboro, was Trayvon Martin. Next to Martin?s name was the date of his death: February 26, 2012.

McGill never knew Martin, a Miami boy who was visiting his father when he was shot by Zimmerman, but she did know two of the other people listed on the monument ? Travares McGill and Corey Donaldson. Since the community put the plaque of names up nearly a year ago, at least two other Sanford kids have been killed.

News of last night?s verdict was greeted with disappointment and some anger in this neighborhood, as residents said they believed police do not adequately respond to violence in their part of town, and that justice is not meted out equally. A jury of six women affirmed Zimmerman?s argument that he feared for his life when he shot the unarmed, 17-year-old Martin in a nearby gated neighborhood.

?It makes me feel like if I?m in need of justice, I won?t win,? McGill said of the verdict. ?I thought it would be better.? A young man passing by overheard McGill and asked, ?How?s it self defense if it don?t apply to me??

Previous murders weigh heavily on the minds of residents, though those killings received far less media attention than the Martin case. Donaldson, a talented musician at his local church, was gunned down in a shooting rampage at his friend?s home in 2011. Travares McGill, then 16 and McGill?s nephew, was shot in 2005 by a security guard who said McGill was trying to run him over in a parking lot .

?It never seems like they try to solve the murders in the urban areas,? McGill said. ?When Trayvon Martin was gunned down, they thought he was just anyone. But he wasn?t.?

Some said they hoped the small central Florida town of 50,000 residents will change for the better because of the Martin case, which sparked a discussion on race and the justice system, as well as self- defense laws. Despite the predictions of a handful of pundits, the verdict was received with calm and no violence in the area.

Lottie Edge, whose children were friends with Dominique Stafford, a 17-year-old stabbing victim whose name is among those on the monument, said she thinks justice has been served.

?I?m a little disappointed, but not really surprised,? Edge said of the verdict. ?The parents just wanted justice for their son. They wanted him to have his day in court and that?s what happened.?

Valarie Houston, pastor of Allen Chapel Church just down the road from the monument, gave a fiery sermon dedicated to Martin and his family Sunday morning. Houston helped lead the protests in the area that prompted the police to arrest and charge Zimmerman in Martin?s death, 44 days after the shooting.

The wood-paneled, modest chapel was only about half full with congregants, many of them wearing matching red T-shirts. Houston said a prayer thanking the Lord for sending Trayvon Martin ?as a sacrifice for all of us.? She said his death revealed ?injustices that lie in Sanford? and that he gave ?his life to protect the youth who will come after him.?

The congregants gave a standing ovation to a young church member who recited a speech she wrote about why Martin is innocent.

Kim Brown, a Sunday school teacher at Allen Chapel, said her middle school-aged students all wanted to talk about the verdict during their morning Bible session. Two of the children had been at the Seminole County Courthouse with their parents when the decision was announced late Saturday night.

?All of them had the same opinion,? Brown said of her students. ?They felt it was unfair and unjust.?

?As children it?s hard for them to totally comprehend, it?s overwhelming,? Brown said, adding that she told them it?s time to move on and come together as a country.

Some of the children said they felt scared by the verdict, and worried that they had to be extra careful when walking around outside. ?They said, we do know we have to be careful. I wish it wouldn?t have to happen that way but that?s how they feel,? Brown said.

The Sunday school teacher reassured her students. ?Let?s just take it as it is. This is just how it is,? she told them.

D-Backs 1st big-league team to broadcast in Navajo

PHOENIX (AP) ? Nearly 92 years after a major league game was first broadcast on radio, the Arizona Diamondbacks became the first big-league team to have its game broadcast in Navajo.

Dan Arnold and George LaFrance had the play-by-play call of Saturday night's game against the Brewers on KTNN, a Navajo-language AM station broadcasting from Window Rock in northern Arizona.

Though the team said Saturday's game was the first baseball game to be broadcast in Navajo, such broadcasts are not new to Phoenix area professional teams. KTNN broadcast Phoenix Suns games in Navajo during the 1990s.
