This So-Nerdy-It's-Cool Calculator Watch Is Your Deal of the Day

This So-Nerdy-It's-Cool Calculator Watch Is Your Deal of the Day

You don't need a timepiece because your phone has a clock, but if you're going to wear one anyway, you should have it make a statement. Here's what this Casio Databank calculator watch says: I'm retro, I'm nerdy, and I think math is really important.

Casio's CA53W watch manages to be both retro and futuristic at the same time. Maybe that's why Marty McFly rocked it in Back to the Future and pretty much every single 80s kid wore one to school. Just look at it: 16 buttons, which allow you to add, subtract, divide and multiply to your heart's content. And as a Casio quartz watch, it'll tell the time quite reliably.

Right now Amazon's selling the Casio CA53W for $12.57 with free shipping over $25 or with Amazon Prime. That's the lowest price Amazon's ever sold it for, and a solid $12 less than MSRP. Hell, that's way less than it sold for in the 80s. [Amazon]

On-Contract iPhones Just Got a Lot Cheaper

This So-Nerdy-It's-Cool Calculator Watch Is Your Deal of the Day

If you're like me, and you're eligible for a new phone (thank you 20-month upgrade) and you're not going to wait, there are a few somewhat compelling deals going on right now for on-contract iPhones.

The best deal going on right now is for AT&T subscribers. They're knocking 50% off all top tier phones, so for instance, an iPhone 5 starts at $100. [AT&T]

Walmart is selling the entry level iPhone for $130 with a new 2-year contract. In-store only. [Walmart via Engadget]

Best Buy is doing a buyback program where your old phone can be worth as much as $150 towards a new one. Personally, I think that's a little low, but it's certainly an option. [Best Buy]

Families skeptical of Pratt cancer study findings

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? For jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney, a long-simmering dispute over worker illnesses was settled by a massive 11-year study that found no elevated risk of brain cancer at its plants. But for dead workers' relatives who first raised concerns years ago, the matter is far from closed.

Their next step hasn't been decided, and the choices are limited. Matt Shafner, a New London lawyer who represents families, said more than 90 workers' compensation claims have been filed. But he won't move forward until an independent review of the study is completed, he said.

"It's not over," said Carol Shea, whose husband, John Shea, worked at Pratt & Whitney's North Haven plant for 35 years and died of brain cancer in 2000 at age 56.

Some relatives of workers who died of brain cancer a decade or more ago are dissatisfied with the study, saying it failed to prove that the deaths of their loved ones were part of a broader problem.

Todd Atcherson, whose father, Charles Atcherson, died in 1998 after working at Pratt & Whitney for about 25 years, said the enormous scope of the study ? health and work records of more than 200,000 employees were reviewed ? fail to explain the deaths of his father and a small group of other workers at the North Haven plant.

"They skewed out the numbers so far, they lost focus of five people who worked in the same site and all died," he said.

Shea said she believes the researchers are "way off."

"I couldn't believe they couldn't come up with anything," she said.

The study, released last month, was launched "in response to the perception of an unusual occurrence" of glioblastoma, a common and aggressive malignant brain tumor, at the North Haven plant. It found the incidence rates of glioblastoma at the site weren't related to workplace exposures.

The environment at the plant featured a blue haze, a product of aerosol generated from metalworking fluids during fast, hot grinding.

The study, which examined seven other Pratt & Whitney plants in Connecticut, found no statistically significant elevations in the rate of cancer among workers. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Illinois at Chicago said they identified 723 workers diagnosed with tumors between 1976 and 2004 at the subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.

The tumors were malignant, benign or unspecified and included 277 cases of brain cancer. Of those, 167 were at Pratt & Whitney's East Hartford site and 57 at North Haven, though North Haven workers were at greater risk of having brain cancer, the study said.

But following a study of the North Haven plant, researchers said they couldn't conclude that the environment or exposures were related to the overall elevations in brain cancer.

Gary Marsh, the University of Pittsburgh researcher who led the study, said that he understands family members' frustrations but that the study is conclusive and definitive.

"Let's face it: Brain cancer is a terrible disease and anyone who suffers from it or had a loved one suffer from it wants to know why they got that disease," he said. "We looked at everything conceivable as a possible cause of brain cancer."

Ray Hernandez, a spokesman for Pratt & Whitney, said the company is satisfied with the study's conclusions and considers the matter closed.

"Since we are confident in the scientific rigor of this comprehensive study, we think it provides the best possible information about this issue," he said in an emailed statement.

The study found no connection between brain cancer and the workplace and researchers found no patterns or trends of other causes of death "suggestive of a workplace relationship," Hernandez said.

In Connecticut, Pratt & Whitney over the years has shut down all but its Middletown and East Hartford plants. Manufacturing processes from decades ago have been transformed and haven't recently raised safety issues.

A few family members said they are wary of the study because it was commissioned by Pratt & Whitney at a cost of $12 million. The university researchers worked independently of Pratt & Whitney and the state Department of Public Health established an advisory group to review the progress, methods and other aspects of the study and address concerns about the study's independence.

John DeLeone, a grinding machine operator at the North Haven plant from 1984 until it closed in 2002, said workers suspected that chemicals specific to that plant were lethal. He criticized the study, which was launched in 2002 in response to concerns about employee deaths at North Haven, for being overly broad rather than focusing on that plant.

"It seemed that only people who got sick were those who transferred from North Haven," he said.

Marsh said the study adds to the body of knowledge of occupational health, used by researchers and relevant to other jet engine manufacturers, such as General Electric Co. and Rolls Royce, he said.

"We concluded there is no evidence of elevated health risks of this population. That's a good thing to know," he said.

But Debra Belancik, the Machinists' union's safety and health representative, said the study "doesn't bring any closure at all."

"All this work we did, all the high rates, all the funerals and wakes I went to, it kind of bothered me a little bit," she said.

Death at Albania polling station

TIRANA, Albania (AP) ? One person died and two were injured Sunday in an exchange of gunfire close to a polling station in Albania, police said, as the country held crucial elections already marred by a dispute that could leave the result up in the air and the country without a government.

Both Conservative Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his close rival, Socialist leader Edi Rama, have hopes for eventual entry to the European Union, but the bloc has expressed concern over whether the country can manage to run fair and free elections.

Once one of the world's hardest-line communist countries, the impoverished country has had a rocky road to democracy, plagued by corruption and with past elections marred by violence and vote-rigging.

Police spokesman Tefik Sulejmani said that Gjon Gjoni, 53, died after being shot in an exchange of fire with Mhill Fufi, 49, a candidate for Berisha's governing Democratic Party, in the town of Lac, about 37 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of the capital Tirana. Fufi and another person were injured.

Sulejmani said the shooting started with an argument, but gave few other details. Rama postponed voting to head to Lac.

Some 3.3 million registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the eighth national polls since the fall of communism in 1990. Because of a battle over the country's election commission, it is uncertain when results will be announced, though the law mandates they be revealed no later than three days after the vote.

Berisha invited all Albanians to take part in the vote and turn Sunday "into a day of festivities and good understanding."

"I assure you that your vote will be fully respected," Berisha told reporters after casting his ballot.

The premier declined to comment on the killing, saying he needed more information first.

Following aggressive campaigns by both Berisha's Democrats and the Socialists, streets in the capital of Tirana were uncommonly empty, but had long queues of people at polling stations.

The country's seven-member election commission, which prepares and holds votes, is down by three people, meaning it may be unable to certify the election. If the election is not certified, it means Parliament cannot be convened and no government formed.

In April, one of Berisha's main government allies withdrew from the coalition to join forces with the opposition. He was then ousted and replaced at the election commission by Berisha's Democrats. That move drew sharp criticism from the United States and the EU, who said it would erode people's confidence in the electoral process.

Three members affiliated with the opposition withdrew in protest, leaving the commission short of the people necessary for 5-2 approval. They have said they would consider returning to the commission to certify the election once they see the results.

Albania joined NATO in 2009 but has failed to gain candidate status from the EU, which is pressing for broader democratic reforms and an improved election record.

Police remove flagpole at centre of Afghan, Taliban row

By Hamid Shalizi and Amena Bakr

KABUL/DOHA (Reuters) - Police have removed a flagpole from the Taliban's office in Qatar, an official said on Sunday, expunging the last visible sign of official decoration that riled the Afghan government and derailed nascent peace talks.

The Taliban was due to hold discussions with U.S. officials in Qatar last Thursday - originally raising hopes the meeting could develop into full-blown negotiations to end Afghanistan's 12-year-old war.

But the session was cancelled when the Afghan government objected to the fanfare surrounding the militants' opening of an office in the Gulf state, complete with flag and official plaques.

Kabul said the regalia gave the mistaken impression the militants - who ruled Afghanistan until they were ousted by the U.S. offensive starting in 2001 - had achieved some measure of global recognition.

The flag and a plaque were removed late last week amid frantic diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute. The flagpole was no longer visible at the building on Sunday.

"The Taliban's flag has been taken down from (their) office in Qatar, the banner and signboard have been removed, and the Qatar government's police have also removed the Taliban flagpole," said Masoom Stanekzai, a member of the Afghan High Peace Council, a government body set up to pursue a negotiated ceasefire with the Taliban.

His comments, released by the Afghan government, did not go into whether that meant the U.S.-Taliban talks could now continue.

TALIBAN SAYS QATAR APPROVED

The Taliban earlier on Sunday said it had erected its flag and plaques with the agreement of the Qatari government, which is hosting the talks.

The statement, issued by the Taliban's spokesman in Doha, Dr. Muhammad Naeem, did not say whether the subsequent removal of the symbols was meant as a concession to other parties in the talks. There was no comment from the Qatar government.

The news of the removal of the flagpole came a day after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry put the onus on the Taliban to revive the talks - and warned the militants their whole office could be closed if the process collapsed.

He kept up the pressure on Sunday, telling reporters in New Delhi a final peace depended on the militants changing course and renouncing violence.

"Any political settlement must result in our judgment in the Taliban breaking ties with al Qaeda ... and accepting the Afghan constitution - including its protections for all Afghans, women and men," Kerry said.

The Afghan government repeated its complaints about the office earlier on Sunday, saying the ceremonial opening of the Taliban office had broken agreements on how the talks would proceed.

"We still need a full explanation about what happened," Said foreign ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai.

The Taliban were pushed out of power in Afghanistan by the U.S. invasion that followed the al Qaeda attacks on U.S. targets on September 11, 2001.

The group has since waged an insurgency to overthrow the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and oust foreign troops.

It has until now refused talks with Kabul, calling Karzai and his government puppets of the West.

How to Address a Cover Letter - Job Searching - About.com

Speaking as a former hiring manager, I dislike ?Dear Hiring Manager? since that?s not my title. My preference is for ?Dear Sir or Madam.?

What I?m writing for, though, is to emphasize that if a name is given in the advertisement, ALWAYS address the letter to that person.

I once received a letter that was obviously copied from a book. For the date, the writer typed ?Date: ______? and handwrote the date. The ad said ?reply to Dave,? and the salutation was ?Dear Hiring Manager:? (at least he properly used a colon. The first sentence was ?In response to your advertisement in the Newspaper A/Newspaper B/Newspaper C, I am applying for a position as Position A/Position B/Position C?? (newspaper names and positions not revealed hear, to help protect the ignorant; this was 20 years ago, after all). The applicant had CIRCLED the newspaper name and position title.

Needless to say, he was not considered any further. The only reason the letter didn?t go into the shredder immediately is that I kept it, without identifying information, as an example of how NOT to write a cover letter.

Just a last point for applicants to consider: if the advertisement or job posting doesn?t specifically say ?no cover letter,? write one. That was my first cut ? if I couldn?t read the letter, I didn?t care what the applicant?s technical abilities were. Whether or not it?s stated in the job description EVERY job requires communications skills.

Review: The Who at Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle - David Morton ...

David Morton reviews The Who at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena 40 years on since classic released

This band just goes on and on.

Forty-eight years after The Who declared ?I hope I die before I get old?, they?re still going strong.

Wildman drummer Keith Moon passed away back in 1978, and bassist John Entwistle died in 2002, but Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend continue to fly the flag.

Last night at a sold-out Metro Radio Arena the pair, 69 and 68 respectively, rolled back the years to produce a performance of power and passion.

Forty years on from the release of Quadrophenia , The Who delivered the classic album in full.

Kicking off with a poweful opening salvo of I Am The Sea and The Real Me, it was clear that Daltrey, who remains in incredible nick, can still hit the notes.

Meanwhile, Townshend, though not as animated as he once was, still plays with incredible intensity.

The pair, even though they?re knocking on, still retain that indefinable charisma.

Quadrophenia, of course, was Townshend?s take on mid-1960s mod culture and, as he has put it, ?life in post-war Britain.? As such, to complement and propel the music, giant video screens showed film clips and still images of the young Who from the mid-60s onwards, and indeed a brilliant montage of post ? 1945 history right up to 9/11 continued through the set.

At one point we enjoyed footage of John Entwistle playing along and in synch to 5.15, then Keith Moon, again on video, singing Bell Boy.

In the absence of the real Moon and Entwistle, an excellent six-piece backing band was on hand to support the star duo.

Session master Pino Palladino excelled on bass, Simon Townshend ? younger brother of Pete ? provided fine guitar and backing vocals, while Scott Devours did a sterling Keith Moon impression behind the drums. (His dad, Ringo, apparently played for some band called The Beatles).

The Quadrophenia section of the show reached its climax with The Rock and a blazing Love Reign O?er Me, before The Who returned to play a selection of their hits. It was this section of the show that really electrified the crowd and brought the whole place to its feet.

Some of the greatest songs in rock history ? Who Are You, You Better You Bet, Pinball Wizzard, Baba O?Reilly and Won?t Get Fooled Again ? rocked the Arena to its foundations, before the pair bowed out with the quiet acoustic? number Tea and Theatre. Townshend thanked the audience for coming ?when times are tough,? and Daltrey told how Newcastle held great memories for the band and wished the Toon a better season next time.

A great gig by classic artists. Right, it?s the 50th anniversary of Tommy in 2019.

When do the tickets go on sale?

The Who did not allow press photographers into last night?s concert.

iPhone Versus Android Mapped Across the Entire World

iPhone Versus Android Mapped Across the Entire World

iPhone versus Android is a battle for the ages, and it'll never really be settled. But now you can see which camp is claiming what territory with this map the that shows the geographic use of both devices across the entire world. Oh and also there's Blackberry.

Now to be fair, this isn't a comprehensive map that indexes what kind of phone everybody uses for everything. Instead, Tom MacWright and data artist Eric Fischer used geotagged data from people posting to Twitter and threw it into MapBox for a visualization. The result is that you'll only see Twitter users, but it's still a pretty representative (and huge) sample. After de-duplicating some 2.8 billion overlapping data-points, they still had 280 million unique locations to work from. iPhones are red, Androids are green, Blackberries are purple, and everything else is pink.

You can take an in-depth tour on your own, but at a glance you'll notice that iPhone users generally have urban centers on lock?in the United States anyway. Meanwhile, Androids are more common in the suburbs. And every so often, you'll spot a pocket of wild Blackberries, like in midtown Manhattan, or Washington DC.

iPhone Versus Android Mapped Across the Entire World

Outside the United States things get really interesting. For instance, in Spain there's hardly an iPhone at all, and Jakarta is Blackberry heaven. So poke around a little bit and see if there's any hidden curiosities you can find. Are you living in enemy territory? Better find out for sure. [MapBox via The Atlantic Cities]

Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active for AT&T

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active for AT&T.

We’re here in New York where Samsung introduced its newest addition to the Galaxy S4 lineup, the Galaxy S4 Active, to US consumers. Our friends across the pond got a bit more fanfare today than we did here at Pepcom’s annual summer shindig, but even without the grand stage, the Active still seems to impress.

What Samsung cooked up here is a true-to-form Galaxy S 4 in every sense of the word – same processor, same gorgeous screen, and same Touchwiz/Jelly Bean experience. There’s one major difference, though: this version can withstand just about anything you throw at it. Shock, sand, water, you name it – the S4 Active is just barely short of bulletproof (don’t test that, please).

NCAA Preview: EAC Generals eye good start in Season 89

By Mark Giongco
INQUIRER.net

EAC Generals Head Coach Gerry Esplana. Noy Morcoso lll/INQUIRER.net

MANILA, Philippines ? After struggling through the first round, Emilio Aguinaldo College showed promise late in last year?s NCAA tournament.

The only problem was they peaked too little too late as their early setbacks cost them another losing year.

And that?s what its coach Gerry Esplana is looking to avoid this Season 89.

?We have to win games right away. Last year, we won just two games in the first round tapos maganda yung second round but it wasn?t enough for us to make the playoffs,? Esplana told INQUIRER.net.

EAC finished at the lower half of the standings last year but the team was just two games behind from the last Final Four slot. And had the Generals won two more games in the first round, it would?ve made the difference.

The race in this season?s Final Four is expected to be neck-and-neck with only defending champion San Beda and perhaps Arellano tagged as clear-cut favorites, but despite it, Esplana believes his team is capable of making it.

?We had a good run in the second round, we were able to win six straight and everybody?s expecting a better performance from us,? said Esplana, who will continue to bank on its foreign import Noube Happi, a six-foot-seven inside operator, and shooting guard Jan Jamon. ?The pressure is on us. Before we?re contented with just a mere improvement but the EAC community is expecting us to have better improvement and our target is the Final Four.?

?We?re doing well, the stint in the Filoil was a big help for us. We were able to play against tough teams. We?re excited and I think we?re ready to play. Every school has the opportunity to make it into the Final Four, it?s just a matter of who wants it more.?

The Generals left themselves with little chance after their poor start. The good news is they get another crack at it with basically the same team from last year.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom hands-on: 10x telephoto, 100x intrigue (video)

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Zoom handson, witty rejoinder here

It's easy enough to describe the Galaxy S4 Zoom, since it's essentially a Galaxy S4 Mini with a 10x zoom lens stuck on the back. But that sort of summary doesn't do it justice. When you hold the phone-slash-camera and look at the optically stabilized image captured by its 16-megapixel, point-and-shoot grade sensor, you begin to realize that -- at least for those who do a lot of snapping and sending -- this combo of components holds some serious power.

Just like the first Galaxy Camera, it's all about fun and immediacy: the ability to edit, organize and share decent-quality images using Android apps and cellular data connectivity. The key advantages are that the GS4 Zoom can work as a regular phone for voice calls, and that it's just about portable enough to be used that way, whereas the Galaxy Camera was a lot bulkier. With these gains, the smaller zoom (10x instead of 21x) and lower-res screen (qHD instead of 720p) don't overly faze us, so long as the final selling price takes it all into account. Ultimately, our only hesitation is the impending arrival of the so-called Nokia EOS, likely due on July 11th, which takes a totally upside-down approach to smartphone photography and is likely to be much more pocketable as a result. Those are two devices we can't wait to put head-to-head, especially in terms of image quality, but our hands-on gallery (and impending video) might help to tide you over in the meantime.

Update: Hands-on video added.

Adafruit smart helmet guides bike riders with Arduino-based light shows (video)

Adafruit smart helmet guides bike riders

Bike sharing systems like New York's Citi Bike may be taking off, but it's doubtful that many participants can find every station without checking a map. Thankfully, Adafruit has unveiled a smart helmet project that could help at least a few of those riders get to their destinations while keeping their eyes on the road. The DIY effort feeds locations to an Arduino-based Flora board and its positioning add-ons, which in turn use a string of NeoPixel LEDs on the helmet as turn indicators. Commuters just have to watch for blinking lights to know where to go next. While the system isn't easy to set up when cyclists have to manually enter coordinates, it is flexible: the open-source code lets it adapt to most any bike sharing system or headpiece. As long as you can get over looking like a Christmas tree on wheels while you navigate, you can build a smart helmet of your own using the instructions at the source link.
